WR Ainias Smith Is Drawing Comparisons To Eagles Veterans

Drawing comparisons between the Philadelphia Eagles' fresh recruits and established or former NFL players. Today, our focus shifts to fifth-round pick Ainias Smith, a wide receiver with a versatile skill set, reminiscent of his time at Texas A&M where he toggled between roles as a receiver and a running back, showcasing an impressive 15.0 yards per catch average in 2023. The Eagles are particularly impressed with his prowess in route running and his ability to make plays after the catch. Moreover, in the context of Kellen Moore's potential to infuse creativity into the Eagles' playbook, Smith emerges as a prime candidate for executing dynamic plays like jet sweeps and other gadgetry.

Though Smith's career statistics may not immediately catch the eye, his standout performance during Senior Bowl practices speaks volumes. In his most notable season in 2023, he boasted 53 receptions for 795 yards and 2 touchdowns, maintaining that impressive 15.0 yards per catch average. Notably, Smith also brings value as a returner, having accumulated 82 career punt returns for 836 yards and securing two touchdowns.

Despite an injury sidelining him from the Combine drills, Smith's prowess shone through in the bench press, where he impressively notched 21 reps. He did, however, partake in Texas A&M's pro day while nursing a stress fracture in his shin. Clocking a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash and posting a commendable 6.86 in the 3-cone drill, it's reasonable to assume that his performance would have been even more stellar had he been at full health.

In assessing his playing style, Smith evokes comparisons to Olamide Zaccheaus, a familiar face known for his slot receiver capabilities. Much like Smith, Zaccheaus, despite being undersized, showcased his adeptness in route running and knack for gaining yards after the catch. It's worth noting that both players also dabbled in running back roles during their college careers, with Smith tallying 72 carries at Texas A&M and Zaccheaus amassing 79 carries at Virginia.

While Smith's physical attributes marginally outshine those of Zaccheaus, boasting superior height, weight, and athletic measurables, both players exhibit promise in their respective capacities. Additionally, Smith's collegiate return experience surpasses Zaccheaus', underlining his readiness for the professional arena.
