Philadelphia Eagles' Training Camp: McCallan Castles Suffers Injury in First Live Period
PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Eagles' first live period at training camp this summer was marred by an injury to rookie undrafted tight end McCallan Castles. The Eagles decided to waive him after practice.
Castles, 24, sustained a right leg injury in front of nearly 50,000 fans during the Eagles' only open practice of the summer. The undrafted free agent, who played his final college season at Tennessee, limped off the field after showing promise as a 6-foot-4, 250-pound receiving tight end. Castles previously spent two seasons at Cal before transferring to UC Davis and ultimately landing with the SEC's Volunteers, where he caught 22 passes for 283 yards and five touchdowns.
Star tight end Dallas Goedert, one of the NFL's best, remains the Eagles' top option. However, the depth chart behind the seven-year veteran is evolving. Former backup Jack Stoll left for the New York Giants after going untendered as a restricted free agent this offseason.
Third-year player Grant Calcaterra is currently the frontrunner for the TE2 position, with veteran C.J. Uzomah and the intriguing Albert Okwuegbunam vying for the No. 3 spot. Despite their efforts, neither has stood out this summer. Athletic prospect E.J. Jenkins, still raw, is likely destined for the practice squad but could make the initial 53-man roster with a strong preseason showing.
Castles was also a contender for a practice squad spot. If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve, which is the most likely outcome given his injury.
