NFL to Rule on Falcons and Eagles Tampering Cases; Heavy Penalties Expected

Insider sources reveal that the NFL is poised to deliver rulings on the alleged tampering cases involving the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles, likely within the week.

The Falcons have been under scrutiny for their purported contact with free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins prior to his signing with the team. Similarly, the Eagles have been under investigation for their alleged interactions with free agent running back Saquon Barkley. The league has engaged with various personnel from both organizations to gather information on these matters. Notably, insiders suggest that the Falcons' actions are viewed as more consequential, hinting at potentially sterner penalties for Atlanta.

Historically, the NFL has maintained a strict stance on tampering infractions, meting out appropriate disciplinary measures. Examples include the Miami Dolphins, who forfeited their 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 third-round selection for multiple tampering incidents involving quarterback Tom Brady and coach Sean Payton spanning from 2019 to 2022. Team owner Stephen Ross incurred a hefty $1.5 million fine, while vice chairman Bruce Beal faced a $500,000 penalty.

Likewise, the Kansas City Chiefs faced consequences for tampering with wide receiver Jeremy Maclin in 2015. The Chiefs relinquished their 2016 third-round pick and a 2017 sixth-round selection, along with a $250,000 fine. Coach Andy Reid and then-general manager John Dorsey were also individually fined $75,000 and $25,000, respectively.
