The Philadelphia Eagles' "Kelly Green" uniforms, which made a comeback last season, were a massive success and are among the most beloved throwback uniforms in the NFL. However, questions arose about whether the team would continue using them after just one season.
Darius Slay, on the "Pulp Phiction" podcast, hinted that the Eagles might not sport the "Kelly Green" jerseys in 2024. Contrary to his remarks, the team later confirmed that the "Kelly Green" jerseys would indeed return, though the specific games they will be worn have not yet been disclosed. It appears Slay's comment might have stemmed from a lack of information regarding the dates for the "Kelly Green" appearances.
On social media, Slay admitted he was uncertain about the uniform selection process. Last season, the Eagles wore their "Kelly Green" uniforms in two games, winning both. The franchise originally used the "Kelly Green" uniforms until 1996, when Jeffrey Lurie changed the team's colors to the current "midnight green." Prior to 2023, the "Kelly Green" look had only returned once, during the first week of the 2010 season to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1960 NFL Championship team.
The Eagles were instrumental in getting an alternate helmet approved by the NFL, which became official for the 2022 season. Philadelphia first introduced an alternate black helmet before debuting the "Kelly Green" throwback helmet last season. This offseason, the NFL expanded its uniform policy to allow a third helmet option starting in the 2025 season for teams not undergoing a uniform redesign in 2024.
These additional helmets, termed "alternate color helmets," can only be worn with one of the team's approved optional uniforms (classic, alternate, or color rush). Thus, the "Kelly Green" helmets are here to stay, and the alternate black helmets may also return by 2025.
